Best Boating In Paradise: Let Us Show You How It's Done

STUDENTS LEARN THE “ROPES” OF SAFE BOATING

AT THE SANIBEL SCHOOL

The Sanibel School is a truly unique school:  A Blue Ribbon School of Excellence students experience rich and diverse curricula.  What also makes this school unique is that our organization teaches the Boat Smart course to all its 6th graders.

“How to Boat Smart” introduces those students to local waters from the perspective of a boat owner.  The class covers a broad range of topics.  In fact, this course is so complete that in its final session, students are given the opportunity to take the Florida Safe Boating Exam and earn a Florida Safe Boating Certificate (a legal requirement for boat operators born after Jan. 1, 1988).

Once the course is done, students will have demonstrated their nautical knowledge and skills in using emergency equipment, docking a boat as well as anchoring a boat, typing knots, using the correct VHF radio procedures, recognizing (and preventing) hypothermia, reading local water charts, knowing the Rules of the Road, and fitting the correct PFD’s (life jackets), among other topics.

How to Boat Smart has been part of The Sanibel School Extended Learning Program for almost twenty years and is one of the Sanibel Captiva Boating Club’s legacy programs, which educate and instill safe boating for captains of all ages.
